Adjust the microscope height until the ink cross 'X' on the paper is sharp. Record reading R1.

Place the slab over the mark. The image raises up. Re-focus and record R2.

Sprinkle chalk dust on top. Move microscope up to focus on particles. Record R3.

Use the Fine Adjustment Knob to focus on the Ink Mark.
